Walter Hojsa

Walter Hojsa (born May 13, 1924 in Brigittenau ; † December 22, 2019 ) is a Viennese folk music singer , multi-instrumentalist and songwriter .

Life

Hojsa grew up as the eighth child of a working class family in Brigittenau. At the age of 14 he learned to play the accordion . He trained as a machine fitter and began performing as a Hojsa-Buam in his spare time with his brother Franz Hojsa in the 1950s . The high point of the duo's career was an appearance at the 1964 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck , including for the Shah of Persia . From 1966 to 1970 the Hojsa-Buam appeared in Grinzinger Phylloxera in Munich-Schwabing for Thomas Hörbiger . In 1970 Walter Hojsa returned to Vienna and initially performed as a solo entertainer . He then replaced Helmut Reinberger as bassist for the Drei Spitzbuben . The trio broke up shortly afterwards. Hojsa founded Toni Strobl and Ferdi Reithofer then the Altspatzen .

This trio also split up in the early 1980s. In Kurt Schaffer, Hojsa found a partner with whom he formed the Hojsa-Schaffer duo for years. Even in old age he occasionally performs with his son Thomas Hojsa . Shortly after his 90th birthday, he was awarded the Golden City Hall Man for his services to the City of Vienna .

As a songwriter

Hojsa has been composing and writing lyrics in the field of folk music since the mid-1960s . Among his best-known hits are Meine Freunderln und Known (1968), I love to hear the songs from Vienna , Maybe there is a Viennese café in heaven , Müsst i 'mei' Leb'n no amol leb'n (1980), A fescher pensioner (1984), It's nice to grow old with an friend (1993) and Die oide Hütt'n .
