Die Spitzbuam , later known as Die 3 Spitzbuam or Die 3 Spitzbuben, were a Viennese cabaret trio.

The members were Helmut Schicketanz ("the boss") (* February 24, 1930, † April 25, 1975), Toni Strobl ("the works council") (* June 18, 1925, † May 12, 2006 on the way to the doctor ) and Helmut Reinberger (the "broad" crowd - alluding to his corpulence) (* August 30, 1931, † October 16, 2011).

The 3 rascals formed a popular Heurigen cabaret in the Austrian capital, were 'masters of the rough joke' and parodied all sorts of hits, especially in the 1960s. Many of the rude jokes are about sex, homosexuality, and alcohol.

In addition, they also produced their own Viennese songs such as: “Why do you have to stop when it's most beautiful?”, “Bleamerl”, “Angschütt wia a Blumenstöckl” or “Ich bin a Schlimmer, wia ma says a Klaner Nascher”.

At the beginning of the 1950s, Schicketanz, Strobl and Reinberger were already part-time musicians. Schicketanz and Strobl worked for the SMV (later OMV ), which was under Soviet administration , Schicketanz as master electricians, Strobl for the company fire brigade. Reinberger worked for the postal administration.

Reinberger describes his colleagues in his biography about the encounter between Schicketanz and Strobl: Schicketanz said: "In 1952 I was engaged as 'Helmut Schicketanz and his soloists' in Deutsch Wagram for a colorful evening. Unfortunately the wind soloists didn't come ... We just were a drummer, a bass violinist and me. Before that there was a funny program with fake whistles and a guitarist. It wasn't bad. It was quite good. I asked him if he would like to play with us so that we could do a little more Are the stage. That was Mr. Strobl. " Furthermore: Toni Strobl and Helmut Schicketanz became friends that evening. And it was a friendship that, despite several separations in the artistic field, only ended with the death of Helmut Schicketanz in 1975.

Reinberger remembers his first encounter with Schicketanz in February 1952: ... a pullman cap carrier with an accordion case appeared next to me, eyed me suspiciously and asked: "Are you playing there today?" "Yes!" "Schicketanz" "I beg your pardon?" "So hate i." "I see!" "Reinberger!" ... What I was accompanying raised my ears up after the first few bars. The man was playing fantastic! Very modern, technically excellent ... This first number, which I jammed with Helmut Schicketanz in the bar of the Zögernitz casino, lasted about a quarter of an hour. Then we went to the counter and drank Brotherhood.

Reinberger wrote about Strobl at that time: I didn't know a Mr. Toni Strobl personally at that time, but I was annoyed about him sometimes. ... Strobl played the guitar and sometimes sang Viennese songs at the Heuriger. Whenever he needed a harmonica player, he usually asked Schicketanz to play with him, which they liked to do, because there was a lot more to be earned at the Heuriger than in the "Loyalty Club". ... As a result, the sentence: "Today I play with the Strobl again" caused slight allergic reactions. When I later got to know Toni personally, I found that he wasn't that "disgusting" at all. But that's another story.

1953 restaurateur Ferry Sidlo ran a wine tavern on Jedleseer Straße. When he was looking for musical accompaniment for his restaurant, his employee Johann Skoudlin , who was also an artist in addition to serving as a waiter , conveyed the commitment to Schicketanz and Strobl. After the two of them inspected the premises, they agreed to play with a third party. At Schicketanz's suggestion, Reinberger became third. The name "3 rascals" goes back to Strobl. Sidlo employs another waiter with artistic ambitions, the so-called director Walter Keller (operetta tenor) .

The artists played at Sidlo's during the weekend. There were other appearances at Wannemacher in Strebersdorf. Between 1956 and 1959 they performed, now full-time musicians, with the landlady Maria Kracher in Kahlenberger Straße.

In the late 1950s Reinberger wrote a parody of 'In der Arena von Guayaquil', a song by Gerd Morell . Strobl contributed the name 'Haselgruber' used in the parody entitled In der Bodega von Langenlois . Entrepreneur and steel mill owner Johann Haselgruber felt affected and complained of insulting his honor. The rascals played a record of the song in court, were cleared and profited from unpaid advertising. The first part of the lyrics reads:

red, their eyes are stubborn and

fishing, but she forces herself to

In 1959 they were hired by Erwin Klein (entrepreneur) , who at the same time bought the Nussberghof in Hackhoferstraße as a permanent venue for the rascals. From 1959 to 1972 they appeared there as the 3 rascals.

Reinberger left the company at the end of 1972. Strobl wanted Franz Christmann (Pipi Christmann) as a replacement, and ultimately Walter Hojsa was chosen . Until March 1973, Schicketanz, Strobl and Hojsa appeared as the 3 rascals and also recorded a long-playing record. Then the group officially split up.

Strobl opened a Heuriger on Grinzinger Strasse in June 1973, and Schicketanz opened one in April 1975. One week after it opened, Schicketanz had a gastric perforation and died after the operation that followed. A reunion of the three was therefore impossible.

There are numerous record releases by the "3 Spitzbuben". Toni Strobl is and remains legendary for his inexhaustible repertoire of jokes and stories.

Helmut Reinberger was the last survivor of this trio and, together with Hermann Bochdansky, traced a long stretch of these Viennese originals in a mischievous way in the book “Das Wien der 3 Spitzbuben”. Texts and photos reflect part of the atmosphere that inspired the guests with Heurigen music and Viennese humor.

The program of the 3 rascals

Schlager parodies : Based on the fact that Schicketanz looked like Josef Stalin with a mustache stuck on, a first Stalin number was created with "Gib Mir Den Wodka, Anuschka" and subsequently hit parodies with alternative text. In the Stalin numbers, Schicketanz imitated the Russian dictator in military costume. One of the later is the parody of Katyusha (song) , in which a kolkhoz, the Kennedy-Khrushchev summit and the bald head of the Russian are discussed, titled "Who's to blame" - Pepi is always to blame (1961 , MP, The Spitzbuam 3).

It was also Schicketanz who imitated Leopold Figl , for example during the preliminary talks for the Austrian State Treaty (1963, LP Die Spitzbuam 6)

They also had "Busy Line" in their program for years (1949, Rose Murphy ). The original recording of their version is included on the MP ( Medium Play Record Format ) from Harmona 3D (an alternative recording is on the compilation LP "Spitzenstunde"). Then they expanded the number by a long discourse before the song, which led to "Let's learn English", eight minutes of dialogue, one minute of song (1962, LP Die Spitzbuam 5).

They parodied My Fair Lady and Hair , some songs played by The Beatles , Peter Alexander , Gus Backus , Freddy Quinn and Udo Jürgens , among many others Puppet on a String (Mein Kleines Stehaufmanderl), These Boots Are Made for Walkin ' (The boots are for hiking) as well as on stage and in the film "One more dance" ( Esther & Abi Ofarim , Abi Ofarim: "During the parody of Esther and me I laughed myself to death. Double conference : Strobl and Reinberger wrote and played double conferences , first as Frisch and Forsch, later blue-blooded as Richard von Löwenbräu and Bodo von Gabelsberg. The focus was on asking joke questions, which was explained in the dialogue of the later numbers by replaying quiz programs ( Quiz 21 , Rudolf Hornegg ). Reinberger was friends with Ernst Waldbrunn and benefited from the artistic exchange.

Joke of the week was told by Toni Strobl. He increased the quality by often reenacting several protagonists. In the context of the performances, Reinberger often annoyed when Strobl - who otherwise occasionally made fun of Reinberger's corpulence - announced this joke.

Operetta singing by Walter Keller: Reinberger describes: One day Mr. Sidlo revealed to us that he had hired a new waiter who was actually an operetta singer, but had slipped into a terrible bankruptcy as a theater director and had to work black somewhere ... He also said he could it would enrich our musical activity if this man, as a "singing waiter" so to speak, would perform one or two operetta songs in the evening. ... His voice wasn't all that bad, but his body language and the theatrical gestures with which he underlined his singing stimulated us to throw in completely irrelevant heckling and gags in his presentation from the start. As part of the performances, the 3 rascals were already fooling around when Keller was announced and also often made fun of his height (165 cm). In 1962 (MP, Die Spitzbuam 4) the artists edited a song from " The Bird Trader ", Keller sings and Strobl disturbs.

Johann (Hans) Skoudlin knew the rascals as early as the 1950s. He was considered a singing waiter from the Nussberghof and sang individual numbers with a Bohemian accent during the performances (on LP from 1963, Die Spitzbuam 6, until 1970, Once warm once cold).

The repertoire of the three also includes Viennese songs (see Wienerlied ) and children's song parodies. Erwin Klein took part in the parody texts.

After the "3 rascals"

Toni Strobl: In addition to running his Heuriger, he formed the trio "Die Altspatzen" with Hojsa and Alfred Reithofer until 1981 . In the eighties he, Reinberger and Rudi Kandera appeared as "Toni Strobl und seine Spezi". Subsequently and until 1993 he, Berti Endler and Franz Christmann were the group "Toni Strobl and his retreads". At the beginning of the 1990s a video was made with Strobl and Reinberger (Toni Strobl & Helmut Reinberger The Best Jokes from Three Decades), the recordings were published on CD and DVD. Strobl managed to give three farewell concerts in the Wiener Stadthalle in November 1993 (with Christmann and Endler, † 2015, as "Alt Spitzbub Toni Strobl and his retreads"), and every event was sold out.

From 1975 to 1982 Helmut Reinberger appeared with Bill Grah and Peter Peters as "Die drei Schmähtandler". After the recent time with Strobl, he, Peters and Kandera were "Die Stehaufmanderln". Reinberger retired in 2003.

The new rascals and Walter Keller: Erwin Klein put together this group with Peter Hajdu , Franz Zimmer, Ernst Geiger, Kandera, Christmann, Heinz Fries and Keller, which then performed in his Nussberghof. In the first program, Pawlatschen Sliver, Reinberger helped with the texts and rehearsals. The ensemble was active until the early 1980s, albeit not always with all members.

Helmut Schicketanz was buried in the Stammersdorfer Zentralfriedhof (group F, row 2, number 24), as was Toni Strobl (group 6, row 4, number 25). Helmut Reinberger rests in the Sieveringer Friedhof (group 22, row 5, number 1).

In 2004 the Schicketanzgasse in Vienna- Floridsdorf (21st district) and in 2008 the Toni-Strobl-Platz were named after members of the ensemble.

The first records (MP vinyl record with a diameter of 25 cm and singles) came out at Harmona 3D . 1960 to 1964 the albums were released by Amadeo (record label) , from 1964 by Polydor . Singles and compilation records were also released by other record companies. Compilation records and singles also contained material that had not appeared in the albums, as well as alternative or abridged recordings.

Film appearances

1967 The great luck As part of the plot they try to get an engagement and have scenes with Gunther Philipp and CW Fernbach .
