Walter III. von Geroldseck (called von Tübingen because his mother was a born Countess Palatine of Tübingen ; † probably in 1333 during the siege of Schwanau Castle , but possibly later) was Lord von Hohengeroldseck .

Life

According to the chronicle of Jakob Twinger von Königshofen and according to the description by Aegidius Tschudi , he was a highwayman who attacked merchants from Schwanau Castle, which stood in a mud on Alsatian territory near the Rhine . He was considered a cruel robber baron who was not squeamish with his prisoners, which ultimately became his undoing: a city union led by the city of Strasbourg ended his existence.

family

Walter III. was a son of Hermann II von Geroldseck († 1327). His grandfather was Walter II von Geroldseck , his great-grandfather was Heinrich von Geroldseck , called von Veldenz , who was a brother of Hermann I von Geroldseck . His great-great-grandfather was Walter I von Geroldseck († 1277), whose father was Wolfgang II von Geroldseck , and whose father, in turn, Burkart von Geroldseck (around 1235), was the founder of the Geroldseck family.

Walter III. was married to Anna von Fürstenberg († 1345; buried in Schuttern ) and had the following children with her:

  • Heinrich II. Lord of Hohengeroldseck ∞ Anna von Ochsenstein
  • Walter IV. Herr zu Hohengeroldseck (mentioned in a document 1330/49)
  • Georg von Geroldseck zu Sulz
  • Gundolf von Geroldseck zu Sulz
  • Wilhelm von Geroldseck zu Sulz (mentioned in a document around 1330)
  • N. (a daughter) ∞ N. ( Duke of Teck )

Wilhelm and Heinrich inherited the rule of Geroldseck with Romberg , Lossburg and Schenkenzell ; Georg, Gundolf and Wilhelm received Sulz and Dornstetten and named themselves von Geroldseck zu Sulz after their new property .
