Walter Konrad (athlete)

Walter Konrad (born July 4, 1928 in Meran , South Tyrol) is a former German athlete and Olympic participant in the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne.

Life

Konrad's sporting career began from 1947 to 1952 with the Innsbruck / Tirol gymnastics club. In 1953 he moved to the Reutte / Tyrol sports club as a cross-country skier and athlete. In 1953 he was Austrian champion over 5000 meters and a member of the Austrian national team. Discovered by Hermann Eberlein , he joined the TSV 1860 Munich club in 1954 and was granted German citizenship. Walter Konrad started for TSV 1860 Munich until 1960. He started at the Olympic Games in Melbourne in 1956 in the 10,000-meter run and finished in 13th place. In 1957 and 1958 he was German champion in the 10,000 meter run . Because of an Achilles tendon injury, the qualification for participation in the 1960 Olympic Games failed . This ended his active sports career. During his competition time, Walter Konrad weighed 64 kg and was 1.74 m tall. He was trained remotely by Arthur Lambert . He had a close friendship with his sports mates Marianne and Herbert Schade as well as Dana Zátopková and Emil Zátopek , well beyond his sporting career. Walter Konrad lived in Munich from 1953 to 1960. He worked at Siemens & Halske as a technician. In December 1960 he went to Ispra / Italy to take a position as a technician in the research center of the "European Atomic Energy Community"  EURATOM . He lives there with his wife (married since 1955). His two children Ariane (* 1963) and Christian (* 1969) live with their families in Munich again.
