history

In the area of today's settlement a village Khachevnya, also Novinskije Khachschewni , was first mentioned in 1831 , which was on both sides of the Astrakhan tract , the trade route between Moscow and Astrakhan . In 1866 the railway line Rjaschsk  - Kozlov , part of the later connection between Moscow and Voronezh and Rostov-on-Don , and at this the station Bogoyawlensk was built. A village grew around the station, initially called Novobogojawlenskije wysselki , from 1888 as Bogojawlenskoje . The name refers to the " apparition of the Lord " (Russian bogojawlenije ).

On January 8, 1958, the place received the status of an urban-type settlement under its current name, after the May Day holiday (Russian Pervoje Maja ). The Rajon had this name since 1937 (previously since its founding in 1935 Rajon Wareikissowki, after the Lithuanian- Soviet party functionary Juozas Vareikis , Russian Iossif Wareikis, who had been arrested in 1937 as part of the Stalin "Great Terror" ). The train station, however, kept its original name Bogoyawlensk to this day .
