Walter Meier (athlete)
Walter Meier (born August 3, 1927 in Rogätz ; † March 25, 2017 in Halle ) was a German athlete and Olympic participant who - starting for the GDR in a joint German team - won the bronze medal in the decathlon at the European Championships in 1958 .
Sporting successes
At the Olympic Games in 1956 he was sixth (6773 points = 6910 points according to the 1985 table); at the Olympic Games in 1960 , he finished 16th (6000 points = 6116 points according to the 1985 table). From 1953 to 1958 he set seven GDR records in the decathlon, three of which were also all-German bests.
After his active time he worked as a university lecturer at the Martin Luther University Halle, all-round trainer and responsible association trainer in the German Association for Athletics (DVfL) of the GDR, from 1966 in a vocational school in Halle, where he lived as a pensioner. As a writer, he appeared in 1964 with a biography. In 2007, despite his severe visual impairment caused by macular degeneration, he wrote a review of his life from a NAPOLA student to a world-class athlete, in which he also objectively and critically looks at current developments in world and sport politics.
Meier belonged to the SC Chemie Halle . When he competed, he was 1.86 m tall and weighed 85 kg.
