Walter Pabst

Walter Pabst (born March 9, 1907 in Darmstadt , † November 18, 1992 in Berlin ) was a German Romance studies and literary scholar .

Pabst studied in Frankfurt with Matthias Friedwagner and his successor Erhard Lommatzsch , even more with the private lecturers Helmut Hatzfeld and Hellmuth Petriconi , and received his doctorate in 1929 with a thesis on Góngora's creation in his poems "Polifemo" and "Soledades" (Revue Hispanique 80, 1930) . He then worked as a journalist in Berlin, Rome and Florence (under the pseudonyms Fedor Wälderlin and Luis Argote). In 1950 he completed his habilitation in Hamburg with Hellmuth Petriconi on novel theory and novel poetry (Hamburg 1953).

In 1955 he was appointed to an extraordinary professorship for Romance Philology in Bonn , and in 1958 to succeed Fritz Neubert to a full professorship at the Free University of Berlin , where he was also dean in 1963. He declined calls to Hamburg, Bonn and Munich. In 1972 he retired.

From 1953 onwards, Pabst was co-editor of the Romance Yearbook for almost 40 years . He had been a full member of the Berlin Scientific Society since 1974 .

Walter Pabst died in Berlin in 1992 at the age of 85. His grave is in the Dahlem cemetery (field 009-5).
