Walter Plöbst

Walter Plöbst (born September 12, 1884 in Sonthofen , † September 7, 1972 in Munich ) was a German classical philologist and librarian .

Life

Walter Plöbst attended elementary school in Munich and from 1894 to 1903 the Maximiliansgymnasium . From 1903 to 1907 he studied Classical Philology and Ancient History at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . In 1906 and 1907 he passed the two sections of the philological teaching examination. From October 20, 1907, he was an intern at the Munich University Library for ten months , then from August 20, 1908 at the Munich Court and State Library , where he passed the specialist examination for academic library service in 1909. In 1910 he was with a dissertation on the rhetorical technique of amplificatio Dr. phil. PhD ; the work was inspired by Engelbert Drerup and supervised by Albert Rehm .

As a librarian, Plöbst first worked at the provincial library in Neuburg an der Donau , then from January 1, 1912 as custodian at the Royal Library of Bamberg , from June 16, 1921 at the Court and State Library in Munich and from April 1, 1922 as State librarian at the University Library of Würzburg . On October 1, 1923, he moved to the University Library in Munich, where he spent the rest of his career. From 1928 he was deputy to the library director Adolf Hilsenbeck . After his retirement, Plöbst was acting head of the university library from 1938 to 1940, and also from 1945 after Joachim Kirchner was removed from office . On May 1, 1946, Plöbst was appointed library director and remained in this position until his retirement on October 1, 1952.

Plöbst was a long-time member of the Association of German Librarians , of which he was treasurer from 1926 to 1928 and deputy chairman from 1948 to 1949.

Plöbst came out with only a few scientific publications. Commissioned by Wilhelm Kroll , he wrote an article about the Greek orator Lysias for Pauly's Real Encyclopedia of Classical Antiquity (RE).
