Walter R. Cooney, Jr. (* 1962 ) is an American chemical engineer , amateur astronomer, and asteroid explorer .
He uses the Highland Road Park Observatory ( IAU code 747) in Baton Rouge in the US state of Louisiana for his observations. Between 1998 and 2005 he discovered 47 asteroids, sometimes together with his colleagues.
The asteroid (35365) Cooney was named after him on April 7, 2005.
