Walter Sauer (born February 12, 1889 in Saint-Gilles / Sint-Gillis , † September 6, 1927 in Algiers ) was a Belgian painter and graphic artist.

Walter Sauer studied from 1903 at the Académie royale des Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles , first with Louis François Moonens in the second class in decorative painting and from 1906 to 1907 with Constant Montald in the first class of decorative painting. He was awarded first prizes in both classes. In June 1911 he received a grant of 1000 gold francs from the Karel Buls Foundation. He spent 1911 on study trips to France ( Paris , Lyon , Marseille , Côte d'Azur ) and then to Italy .

In 1914 he took part in the Salon de la Libre Esthétique and the three-year salon in Brussels. With the work L'Atlantide he won second prize in the Gilles Lambert Godecharle competition.

During the First World War , Walter Sauer was exempted from military service due to his fragile health. He gave up painting around 1916 to devote himself to drawing. He was inspired by the sculptor Victor Rousseau (1865–1954).

In July 1917 he presented several works in the Salon of Painters and Sculptors of Nude Art. He devoted himself to the portraits of women and female nudes in painting and graphics. Around 1923 his art was recognized internationally. From April to October 1925 he was one of the representatives of Belgium at the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Art in Paris. During 1926 he spent two months in Brittany .

In 1927 he received an important commission from the banker Josse Baron Allard (1868-1931), who commissioned him to decorate a room in the Byzantine style with five decorative panels depicting episodes from the life of Christ. This assignment gave him the opportunity to travel. He left Belgium at the end of June, traveled through the Pyrenees to Spain before coming to Algeria, where he wanted to collect the documents necessary for his work. Due to food poisoning , he died unexpectedly in Mustapha Hospital in Algiers at the age of 38.
