Walter Strerath

Walter Strerath (born September 18, 1942 in Odenkirchen ; † September 23, 1981 in Mönchengladbach ) was a German jazz pianist .

Life

Strerath has played with his trio at local events since 1960; since 1963 he toured nationwide. In the Netherlands he also appeared with Jack van Poll , Ruud Pronk and René Thomas . The performance at the second Hammerfeld Jazz Festival in Roermond was partially documented by ZDF. Parts of an appearance in Iserlohn were broadcast by WDR . In the mid-1970s he played with his trio at the Cascais Jazz Festival and received an invitation to the Newport Jazz Festival . In 1976 Strerath appeared in the first broadcast of the Kölner Treff with Alfred Biolek and Dieter Thoma , where he also fought a piano battle with Freddy Quinn . In his main job, Strerath worked for a long time in his father's business as an agricultural machinery dealer and only switched to the professional warehouse in 1980. He died of a heart attack at the age of 39 .

Prizes and awards

Strerath was awarded third place at the German Amateur Jazz Festival in Düsseldorf in 1963 , two years later as best soloist. In the following year 1966, his trio (with bassist Michael Dieck and drummer Gert Pütz) won first place at this festival. In 1967 and 1968 he won the Mönchengladbach International Jazz Piano Festival; In 1968 he was honored as the best pianist at the Friedrich Gulda Festival in Vienna. In the same year he achieved third place at the Jazz Festival Zurich .
