Walther Löbering (born July 12, 1885 in Plauen , Vogtland, † December 22, 1969 in Maulbronn ) was a German painter , graphic artist , sculptor and astronomer .

Life

He attended the Realgymnasium in Plauen and then studied at the Dresden Art Academy as a master student of Carl Bantzer and Robert Sterl . During the semester break he followed Bantzer to the Willingshausen painters' colony . He received numerous awards while still a student. He completed his studies with a study trip to Italy. In the First World War he was a soldier, after the end of the war he married and settled in Fasendorf . From 1923 on he was a teacher at the state art and master school for the textile industry in Plauen. Among his students were Manfred Feiler and Karl-Heinz Adler .

His artistic work initially only comprised paintings, but he soon turned to graphics and sculpture. He achieved artistic importance primarily through his painterly work, so he is considered the "old master of Vogtland painting".

In addition to teaching and his artistic career, he was interested in astronomy and set up his own observatory in Fasendorf , where he observed Jupiter in particular , but which he also made available to the interested public. Although he had only acquired his astronomical knowledge autodidactically , his achievements were recognized in the professional world. The German Academy of Sciences in Berlin awarded him the Leibniz Medal in 1954 for his astronomical achievements .
