life and work

From 1939 Feiler studied with a state scholarship at the State Art School for the Textile Industry in Plauen , especially with Kurt Geipel and Walther Löbering .

In 1943, Feiler was drafted into military service on the Eastern Front. He was trained as a radio operator and served in a unit with the cabaret artist Werner Finck . In the summer of 1943, Manfred Feiler suffered a back wound from a shrapnel. As a result, he was paralyzed from the waist down and in a wheelchair.

In 1948 Manfred Feiler showed his first exhibition in the Fritz Geyer gallery and in the Lutherhaus (Plauen) . At that time, Feiler was working as an advertising designer for the retail organization. He also worked as a designer for textile companies in the region. In the further course of time he refused to make portraits of political personalities and as a consequence resigned from his employment. From 1952 he worked as a freelance artist.

In 1961 an exhibition of abstract paintings followed in the Fritz Geyer Gallery in Plauen. However, it was criticized in the press, and Feiler was mocked as a “pro-Western grease-maker” who shamed the national culture of the GDR. As a result, Feiler fell victim to the so-called formalism dispute and was banned from exhibiting. He turned to Otto Dix , who wrote a letter in January 1962 who professed the Plauen artist. Nevertheless, Feiler was hushed up in the following years and found himself in artistic isolation. Despite the hostility, Feiler was included in the artist lexicon of the 20th century in 1962.

Feiler's first exhibition after reunification in 1989 took place in Erfurt . Freed from political pressure, he experienced a new period of artistic creativity. He now went on study trips abroad. He was particularly fascinated by the landscapes of Italy, Mallorca and the North Sea coast of Germany. He processed the impressions of his travels in his paintings. Further exhibitions followed a. a. in the Thuringian state parliament , in Plauen, Kiel, Bamberg, Nuremberg, Bad Gandersheim, on Sylt and Mallorca, Schwäbisch Hall, Bernburg, Reichenbach, Schleiz, Schilbach (Schöneck) , Hermsdorf, Hof, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Salzwedel, Siegen, Oelsnitz / V ., in Mylau Castle and in early 2013 in Bad Elster.

In 1998 he came into contact with the gallery owner Paul DeBruyne in Naples (Florida) in the United States . In 2001 the Freedom Museum Washington bought two paintings for its collection. In the following period there were various visits from art enthusiasts from the United States who wanted to get to know Manfred Feiler and the Vogtland . Due to the international distribution of his pictures, Manfred Feiler earned the unofficial title of "Ambassador of the Vogtland".
