The roller skinks (genus Chalcides ) include shapes with short legs and five toes that have adapted to life in sandy soils, as well as snake-like species that have their legs reduced to short three-toed stumps. The latter inhabit biotopes with low vegetation as "grass hatchers".

distribution

On European soil the spotted roller skink ( Chalcides ocellatus ) lives on Sardinia , Sicily , Malta , Crete , the Ionian Islands , the Peloponnese and Attica , the Iberian roller skink ( Chalcides bedriagai ) and the western ore crawl ( Chalcides striatus ) on the Iberian Peninsula , and the Italian ore crawl ( Chalcides chalcides ) in Italy south of the Po Valley . The ore sneaks belong to the grass-slipper type and have greatly reduced limbs.

Four species are endemic to the Canary Islands . The other species live in North Africa and the Middle East.
