Ward Pinkett

Ward Pinkett (born April 29, 1906 in Newport News , Virginia , † March 15, 1937 in New York City ) was an American jazz trumpeter .

Pinkett was the son of an amateur cornetist and played the trumpet when he was ten. He was a member of the Hampton Institute school band and later studied at the New Haven Conservatory of Music. He began his musical career with the White Brothers Orchestra in Washington, DC ; then he moved to New York City. There he played in the bands of Charlie Johnson , Willie Gant , Billy Fowler , Henri Saparo , Joe Steele and Charlie Skeete . Jelly Roll Morton involved him in recordings between 1928 and 1930; you can hear his solos on Strokin 'Away and Low Gravy (recorded July 14, 1930). He also worked with Chick Webb , Bingie Madison , Rex Stewart (1933) and Teddy Hill in the early 1930s ; 1935 with Albert Nicholas and Bernard Addison in Adrian Rollini's Tap Room and briefly in Louis Metcalf's Big Band. Pinkett participated in 23 recording sessions between 1928 and 1935, including a. of King Oliver , Bubber Miley , Clarence Williams , James P. Johnson and The Little Ramblers with.
