history

The first documentary mention of Gröba took place in the period 1181–1214. The name of the Sorbian dead end village means something like mountain ridge or sandbank. In the 13th century, the burgraves of Altenburg owned the place. In 1277 Burgrave Albrecht III transferred. von Altenburg three talents, which he had received as interest from the goods in Gröba, the Teutonic Order of Altenburg.

Later the place belonged to the Wettin office of Altenburg , which from the 16th century was under the sovereignty of the following Ernestine duchies due to several divisions in the course of its existence : Duchy of Saxony (1554 to 1572), Duchy of Saxony-Weimar (1572 to 1603), Duchy of Saxony -Altenburg (1603 to 1672), Duchy of Saxony-Gotha-Altenburg (1672 to 1826). When the Ernestine duchies were reorganized in 1826, the place again became part of the Duchy of Saxony-Altenburg.

After the administrative reform in the duchy, Gröba belonged to the eastern district (until 1900) and to the Altenburg district office (from 1900). Legally, the place was subordinate to the Altenburg District Court since 1879 and to the Meuselwitz District Court since 1906 . From 1918 Gröba belonged to the Free State of Saxony-Altenburg , which was incorporated into the State of Thuringia in 1920. Heukendorf was assigned to the newly founded Altenburg district in 1922. In 1923 it was incorporated into Wintersdorf, with which Gröba came to the city of Meuselwitz on December 1, 2007.

Lignite was mined in Gröba as early as 1787/88. Only the residents of the 16 farms of the 54 properties were active in agriculture. In the course of the unification of the ADAV and the SDAP in Gotha in 1875, some workers joined the SPD , it was the first party organization in the Meuselwitz-Rositzer brown coal area . The farmers joined the LPG in the 1950s .
