Warwick Manson Ward (born December 3, 1891 in St. Ives , Cambridgeshire , † December 9, 1967 in Welwyn Garden City , Hertfordshire ) was a British actor with a short but intense career in German silent films and a film producer .

Life

Warwick Ward joined the stage in 1907 and performed mostly in social plays in the years to come, but also had success with classical roles. His famous colleague Sir George Alexander was one of his most famous stage partners.

After returning from military service, Ward began his film career in 1919. There, as before on stage, he was preferred to be cast as the perfect gentleman and youthful charmer and lover. Ward peaked in popularity in the mid-1920s. A film role took him to Hollywood , from 1925 to 1928 he shot mainly in German studios. His German debut, which he gave in EA Dupont's production of Varieté , made him known internationally . There Ward played the trapeze artist Artinelli, who Emil Jannings teased his lover and pays for it with his life. In 1928 Ward returned to England, but could not assert himself in the domestic sound film. He made his last (tiny) appearance in the Kurt Gerron production Kind, I'm looking forward to seeing you at the beginning of 1933 .

After returning home to London, Ward moved behind the camera and made his debut as a producer for the Welwyn film company in early 1937. After a year and a half, this career was temporarily over, but he returned to film production at the end of 1941, this time for the Associated British Picture Corporation . With subjects such as the war and outbreak drama The Man from Morocco , the romantic comedy Jugendliebe and the musical romance Das tanzende Wien , on which he had also worked as an author, he achieved some commercial successes in the 1940s. With another "Welwyn" production, the romance The Young and the Guilty , Warwick Ward said goodbye to active film work in early 1958.
