Church in Wasserhorst

The Evangelical Church of Wasserhorst is a Protestant church in Bremen in the Blockland district in the former parish of Wasserhorst .

history

Building

In the 12th century, a small Romanesque church was built near the mouth of the Wümme , which could only be reached by boat or over the ice in winter. Because of the many floods, the church was located on a six meter high hill, like an eagle's nest "Up'r Horst". This is how the parish village of Wasserhorst got its name. It was first mentioned in a document in 1185.

The square west tower made of bricks and a tent roof is said to date from the 13th century because of its Gothic ogival sound openings. It has largely been preserved as it is. The tower clocks have wrought-iron dials. A bell from 1474 comes from the ore caster Ghert Klinghe .

In 1743 the hall church was built in the Baroque era for the Reformed community of that time. The elongated nave made of red brick under a high gable roof emerged from the renovation of the old church. Six tall rectangular windows structure the side walls, two windows the straight east wall. It was previously dedicated to Simon Peter and Judas Thaddäus .

Kirchwurt with cemetery

The Kirchwurt rises significantly above the rest of the village of Wasserhorst. It was cut in the northeast when today's road was built on the Wümmedeich, as can be seen from a retaining wall built around 1900. The cemetery on the Kirchwurt is still occupied. Some tombstones date from the 17th and 18th centuries.

Interior, fittings and organ

The transversely oriented preaching church with its interior hardly changed since 1743 refers to the Reformed- Calvinist character. The pulpit and altar are on the southern transverse wall. The square coat of arms windows from the 18th century were financed by Bremen councilors and other personalities. The flat, wooden beamed ceiling is adorned with lively tendrils.

In the past, fixed seating was built in. In the case of the newer, loose stalls, the traditional peasant house brands (property marks ) have been adopted. They remind of the chair justice of long -established peasant families.

In the middle of the gallery stands the third Wasserhorst organ , which was revised by Alfred Führer .
