The Barbian hydropower plant , also known as the Barbian-Waidbruck hydropower plant , is a run-of-river power plant in Barbian in South Tyrol , which is fed by the hydropower of the Eisack . Barbian is the hydropower plant with the largest water flow in South Tyrol.

location

The power plant is located in the municipality of Barbian. The power house, water tunnel and castle and weirs are located on the right bank of the Eisack, not far from the SS 12 (Brennerstaatsstraße) . The water intake is further north at Klausen near the exit of the Villnöß valley . From there the water flows through a 6.75 km long tunnel to the moated castle above the power station.

history

Construction of the power plant by the major Italian company Montecatini began in 1936. The power plant was put into operation just two years later. The electricity generated was used, among other things, for aluminum production in the Bozen industrial area.

On the left side of the power station was an equestrian statue of Benito Mussolini made of aluminum, enthroned over the entrance to the access tunnel. The original inscription Al Genio del Fascismo (The Genius of Fascism) was changed to Al Genio del lavoro italiano (The Genius of Italian Labor) in 1945 . On the night of January 30th to 31st, 1961, the statue was almost completely destroyed during an attack by the Liberation Committee of South Tyrol .

On July 1, 2015, a burst pipe caused major water ingress into the engine room. The power plant had to be disconnected from the grid and the water standing over five meters high had to be pumped out by the fire department. People were not injured.

The power plant has been operated by Alperia Greenpower , a subsidiary of Alperia AG , since June 2016 . The power plant was previously operated by SE Hydros AG.

technology

The height of fall from the water tower is 60 m. The total output of the power plant is 55 MW, there are three Francis turbines installed. The max. The flow rate is 100 m³ / s, which means that it has the highest flow rate of all hydropower plants in South Tyrol. The power plant is remotely controlled from the Kardaun network control center.
