The Gartenau power plant in Berchtesgaden is a run-of-river power plant , which today has a total output of around 1.9  MW . This power plant was the first hydropower plant built by the Royal Bavarian State Railways to generate traction power and, until its conversion, the oldest traction power hydropower plant of the Deutsche Reichsbahn . Today the power plant generates three-phase current for the public grid. It is located in the Gartenau industrial estate of the Gnotschaft or the Berchtesgaden district of Unterau and is operated by AUF Eberlein & Co GmbH .

history

The Gartenau hydropower plant was built on the Berchtesgadener Ache in 1907 and 1908 to supply traction power to the Berchtesgaden – Hangender Stein railway line and the Königsseebahn . The power plant cuts off an arch of the Ache, which is a tributary of the Salzach .

In 1938 with the shutdown of the Berchtesgaden – Hangender Stein line and the subsequent conversion of the Königsseebahn to single-phase alternating current 15 kV 16⅔ Hz in 1942, the power station was no longer needed as a traction power station. The Saalach power station in Bad Reichenhall then took over the supply of the Königsseebahn . In the Gartenau power plant, the previous DC generators were therefore replaced by three-phase generators, built in 1941. In 1967 the power plant was sold to Bayerische Elektrizitätswerke .

The power plant was sold to AUF Eberlein & Co. GmbH in 2008. A generator was damaged in a fire in April 2009 and had to be overhauled. The power plant was renovated in 2013, which significantly increased its output.

Original technology

The river arch is cut off by a canal about 550 meters long. At the beginning of the channel has been in the Ache overflow weir built, which is at about a 45 degree angle to the flow axis. The weir dammed the Ache by about a meter. The intake structure is on the left side of the river. This consists of a coarse screen and a subsequent gravel trap to separate the bed load of the river from the water before the canal.

The headwater canal was 3.5 meters wide and 363 meters long at the base, with a gradient of 0.29 meters. The channel is designed for 10 m³ / s. In front of the power station, the canal expands to 16.5 meters. A common fine screen with a mesh size of 20 mm protected the turbines. The turbines could be shut off individually with inlet gates . The power plant was built for three turbines, but initially only two turbines were installed. The turbines are designed as adjustable Francis twin shaft turbines with a vertical axis, each with an absorption capacity of 5 m³ / s. With a gradient of 8.76 meters and with full fogging, the turbines developed 450 hp each. A flywheel and a hydraulic controller keep the speed constant at 250 rpm.

The generators are elastically connected to the turbines via belt couplings. The direct current generators provide an output of 300 kW with a terminal voltage of 1000 volts. A buffer lead accumulator was housed in a separate building, which could compensate for short-term fluctuations in output.

Five feed sections were supplied directly from the power plant. Excess energy could be converted into three-phase current with a converter in the power plant and from there to Berchtesgaden.

Redevelopment

Between 2011 and March 2013 the power plant was completely renovated. A new, additional Kaplan turbine was installed, with a diameter of 1400 mm, an output of 946 kW, at a speed of 333 / min and a new head of 10.54 meters. As part of this work, the weir system and the inlet structure were rebuilt as accompanying measures and a dam elevation of previously 512.96  m above sea level. Above sea level at 513.8  m NHN , or at the power plant 513.6  m above sea level. NHN made. Furthermore, the cross-section of the headwater channel was enlarged from 10 m³ / s to 20 m³ / s and a fish passage was built. The underwater canal was also deepened. All these measures increased the total output to around 1.9 MW.
