The Rannoch Hydroelectric Power Plant is a hydroelectric power plant on Loch Rannoch in the Scottish Council Area of Perth and Kinross . In 2011, the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

The installation of a network of hydropower plants along the river Tummel is one of the early projects in Scotland to generate energy from hydropower after the end of World War II . However, some private power plants were built independently before the war broke out. In addition to the Rannoch hydropower plant, this also includes the Tummel hydropower plant . The final Pitlochry hydroelectric power station was completed in 1950. Unlike the run-of-river power plants used in an earlier network in Argyll and Bute , the network along the Tummel focuses in particular on the damming of lakes, including Loch Rannoch.

The Rannoch hydropower plant was built between 1931 and 1933. William Halcrow was available as a consultant for the planning . Balfour Beatty carried out the work.

description

To the north-east of the power plant, the water from various mountain streams is brought together and guided over several kilometers to above the power plant via a channel that runs underground in sections. It is fed via pressure pipes with a gross head of 156 meters to the machine house , in which two Francis turbines with a total output of 44,000 kW are installed. The water drains into Loch Rannoch.

The machine house has a simple neoclassical design. The south-facing main facade of the two-story structure is four axes wide. Simple pilasters structure the facade vertically. The tall windows on the ground floor close with flat elliptical arches with suggested keystones . The basement is visible below the bridge over the draining water.
