Water gate (architecture)
A water gate is a fortified gate that leads from a castle or city wall directly to a quay , river bank, or port . In the Middle Ages , the gate gave people and goods access from the water to the castle or the fortified area; it also gave the crew direct access to the waterway within the fortifications .
A water gate is also a gate that, as part of the fortification, spans a watercourse that leads from the outside area into the fortified area (or vice versa). The gate thus secures access via the watercourse and is intended to prevent enemy intrusion on the waterway.
