Tower and former machine house from the south

The former water tower in Rheinbach is located in today's Stadtpark in the south of the city and is used as an artist's studio. The converted building has been a listed building since December 18, 1984 .

The tower was part of the first Rheinbach water and electricity works, which went into operation in 1897. The central plant replaced the previously used mobile water barrels, with which the residents were supplied decentrally from six public wells (by means of manually operated water pumps ).

The water tower was equipped with what was then a modern intze tank, which made it possible to climb the upper tank space by installing an inner cylinder. The roof was sloping and had a lantern , the sheathing was made as rabitz plaster . The waterworks with its tower was in operation until 1949 .

From May 1955 the district of Bonn used the tower as a hose maintenance facility for the fire brigade. This use ended in 1969. In the period that followed, the water tank in the top of the tower was dismantled and slimmed down so that the shape of the tower now looks more like a lighthouse. The tower and the associated former machine house were used by the glass artist Udo Edelmann from the early 1980s until 2019 . The studio glass artist runs the Edelmann studio glassworks and a gallery here, and lives in the ensemble of buildings with his wife Chris.

Many glass artists have worked in the former water tower since 1982 and exhibited here (such as Volkhard and Renate Precht, Günter and Henry Knye or Stanislaw Borowski).
