Udo Edelmann (born October 6, 1938 in Landsberg an der Warthe, today: Gorzów Wielkopolski , Poland ; † July 7, 2019 in Bonn ) was a German sculptor , glass designer and designer .

Life

Edelmann was born in Landsberg an der Warthe in the then province of Brandenburg in 1938. His father fell just before the end of World War II. The mother fled with her two small children to Trappenkamp in Schleswig-Holstein . It was here that Udo Edelmann came into contact with the material glass for the first time, the fascination of which accompanied him for a lifetime.

In order to gain professional access to glass, Udo Edelmann first took up chemistry and technology studies and then completed an apprenticeship at the Rheinbach State Glass College; where he later took on a teaching position. A crucial professional station was the Ichendorfer Glashütte, which he joined in 1970 and where he quickly rose from assistant director to technical director with power of attorney.

The experimental reconstruction attempts of antique ribbed bowls and thread glasses, for which Edelmann was used, were a particular challenge. So he got to know the renowned archaeologist Prof. Otto Doppelfeld and was allowed to develop the first true-to-original replicas of antique glasses from the Roman-Germanic Museum in Cologne. In 1978 the replicas were made in the Ichendorfer Glashütte for the CCAA glass gallery in Cologne.

In 1980–82, the Süßmuth glassworks in Immenhausen launched an "Edition of Roman Glasses" created under Edelmann's responsibility.

Edelmann went to Sweden for a two-year internship. He later took on the planning and construction supervision of one of the larger glass factories for the PR China in Guangzhou (Canton) as well as other consultancy functions in Guatemala and Portugal . For the companies Roldao (Marina Grande, Portugal) and Glassartsa Vidrio soplada (Guatemala CA) he worked out design drafts that were incorporated into production. In 1981 he curated the exhibition "Glaskunst 81", which was shown parallel to the Federal Garden Show , in Kassel , a milestone in the international studio glass movement alongside the Coburg Glass Prize.

In 1982 Udo Edelmann settled in Rheinbach and, together with his wife Chris, opened the "Glashaus am Wasserturm" on the site of the former Rheinbach waterworks

plant

Edelmann succeeded in reviving the "Graal technique" developed in Sweden in 1917. In 1984 he was able to demonstrate it to an international audience of experts, the Technical Committee V of the German Glastechnical Society, which met in Rheinbach. In addition, the "glass house at the water tower" put its own studio or. Design line that was significantly influenced by Chris Edelmann.

In the spring of 2016, the city of Gorzów Wielkopolski honored the artist's life's work with an exhibition in the city's historical warehouse, which is now used as a museum. Regional media coverage of this exhibition included reports on TVP 3 (Gorzów Wielkopolski) , Radio Zachód, and Gazeta Wyborcza newspaper (regional edition). The Rheinbach Glass Museum will present this exhibition in summer 2016 under the title "Udo Edelmann - Glass Designer - Sculptor - Designer". The exhibitions in Poland and Germany and the publication of a bilingual accompanying book were supported by the Federal Commissioner for Culture and Media and the Rhineland Regional Council.
