Vassily Maté ( Russian Василий Васильевич Матэ * February 23 . Jul / 6. March  1856 greg. In Virbalis , † April 9 jul. / 22 April  1917 greg. In Petrograd ) was a Russian painter , draftsman and etcher .

Life

Maté attended 1870-1875 the drawing school of the Society for the Promotion of Art in St. Petersburg , where he learned from 1872 with Lavrenti Avxentjewitsch Serjakow . He then studied 1875-1880 at the Russian Art Academy with Fyodor Ivanovich Jordan . Finally, he made a multi-part etching of the head of John the Baptist based on the study by AA Ivanov for the image of Christ before the people , for which Maté received a silver medal. He then studied with a scholarship from the St. Petersburg Academy from 1880 to 1883 in Paris with François Pannemaker and Claude Ferdinand Gaillard as well as in Germany , England and the Netherlands .

Maté became one of the most important etchers in Russia. In 1889 he switched from woodcuts to etchings. He made portraits of personalities from Russian history and culture as well as reproductions of paintings and drawings by important Russian painters, in particular by WM Wasnezow , IJ Repin , VI Surikow and IP Trutnew . In doing so, he contributed significantly to the popularization of Russian art. In addition, he also reproduced works by Murillo , Rembrandt, and other Western painters. He also published a large number of etchings in the Russkaya Starina and other magazines, in reading books and other printed works.

In addition to his creative work taught Maté in St. Petersburg 1884-1909 at the Baron Stieglitz - Drawing School , 1894-1917 at the Imperial Academy of Arts and in 1911 at the Drawing School of the Society for the Promotion of the Arts . His students included AP Ostroumowa-Lebedewa , Iwan Nikolajewitsch Pavlov , Adrian Vladimirovich Kaplun and Pawel Alexandrowitsch Schillingowski . The painters IJ Repin and WA Serow and the architect I. A. Fomin learned from Maté .

In 1913, Maté became a Real Councilor of State ( 4th nobility ).
