The Waterford Kamhlaba United World College of Southern Africa (UWCSA for short) is one of 17 United World Colleges worldwide , a group of schools that teach tolerance and social responsibility through international education and social commitment. Typically sixteen to eighteen year olds take the International Baccalaureate (IB) after two years of schooling , but Waterford College also teaches grades 6 to 10 students who want to earn an IGCSE .

history

The school was founded in 1963 by the British Michael Stern in response to the education system in South Africa, which was heavily influenced by apartheid . When King Sobhuza II attended the school in 1967, he named it "Kamhlaba". Kamhlaba is siSwati and means “to be of the world”, “to be one's own world” and “to be all of one world”. Waterford gained international fame when Nelson Mandela , while he was in prison, and Bishop Desmond Tutu sent their children there. The college was one of the few schools in southern Africa where students, regardless of skin color or nationality, studied together. In 1981 the school received the title “United World College”.

campus

The Emhlabeni Hostel

Waterford Kamhlaba College is located on a hill in Sidwashini near the city of Mbabane in the Kingdom of Swaziland . The main buildings were designed by the Portuguese architect Pancho Guedes . The center of the campus is the plaza, which is bordered by the auditorium, the teachers' room and secretariat, the amphitheater as well as the Center for Creative Learning - Drama, CCLD for short, and the Center for Creative Learning Music, CCLM for short. The building, which houses the CCLD on the first floor and the CCLM on the ground floor, was built in 2005 in memory of Jane Holland, daughter of David Attenborough , and her mother who died during the tsunami disaster in December 2004 .

The IB boarding school students are housed in the two different residences, Emhlabeni and Elangeni. The boarding school students in grades 6 to 10 live in Esilveni and Ekkukuleni. Due to the growth of the school, the classroom building was expanded and two more houses were built in Elangeni.
