Way of the Warrior is a beat-'em-up - video game , which in 1994 exclusively for the game console 3DO was released.
Gameplay
Nine fighters from around the world are looking for the ultimate challenge. You can find them in the “Way of the Warrior” tournament. The winner can register in the “Book of the Warriors”. There are nine levels available.
development
Development of the game began in 1993 and took 12 months to complete. The total cost was $ 100,000.00 and was funded through sales of the Rings of Power game . Even so, the production was quite cheap, with the most expensive costume costing $ 150.00. The characters were mimed by friends who received a 25 USD fee. "Two older Macintosh " served as the development platform . In the absence of blue screen technology , a large beige screen was procured and hung in the rented apartment in Boston . For the correct focal length of the film camera, it had to be set up outside the apartment in the hallway. The landlord was so upset about this that the tenants lost their deposit .
An arcade implementation based on 3DO in cooperation with American Laser Games was discontinued despite existing and tested prototypes.
Reviews
Overall, the game received moderate reviews, the German-language website Nexgam praised the presentation and the sound, but criticized the controls as sluggish and the speaker as embarrassing. In addition, the animations are mediocre. Based on the user ratings, a rating of 8.5 / 10 is determined. The German magazine Video Games 5/95 determined similar strengths and weaknesses and awarded 64% (graphic 68%, sound 71%).
MobyGames calculated a score of 56%.
Commercial win
Way of the Warrior was the first beat 'em up on the 3DO and was among the top 10 best-selling games. Even the well-known competitors Super Street Fighter II Turbo and Samurai Shodown were left behind.
Remarks
The soundtrack comes from the American metal band White Zombie and comes from their music album La Sexorcisto: Devil Music Volume One. The game Spacewar! is included as an Easter Egg and can be unlocked with a cheat .
