Weberocereus tonduzii is a species of plant in the genus Weberocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors the Swiss botanist and plant collector Adolphe Tonduz (1862–1921).

description

Weberocereus tonduzii grows climbing, spreading or hanging with shoots branching towards the tip of the shoot or laterally , which develop numerous aerial roots . The light green shoots are round at their base over a length of 1 to 4 centimeters, then they are triangular. They are up to 40 inches long and 3 to 5 inches wide. The shoot surface is slightly concave between the slightly lobed edges. The areoles on the shoots are covered with whitish or blackish wool. There are one or two conical to needle-like, brownish thorns that are up to 2 millimeters long. The thorns can sometimes also be missing.

The funnel-shaped, white flowers appear individually near the shoot tips and are 7 to 8 centimeters long. Your flower tube is almost straight or curved upwards. The humped Pericarpell is covered with scales, dark wool and radiating, 1 to 6 millimeter long thorns. The almost spherical, initially light green fruits later turn yellow. They have a diameter of up to 4 centimeters. Their pulp is white.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Weberocereus tonduzii is distributed in Costa Rica in the provinces of Limón and San José at altitudes of 1800 to 2400 meters.

It was first described as Cereus tonduzii in 1902 by Frédéric Albert Constantin Weber . Gordon Douglas Rowley placed the species in the genus Weberocereus . A synonym is Werckleocereus tonduzii (FACWeber) Britton & Rose (1909).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Vulnerable (VU) ", d. H. listed as endangered.
