history

The name “Weeping Water” is derived from the French name “l'eau qui pleure”, which in turn is based on an Indian name and refers to the sound that water makes when it falls down a small waterfall. Translated it means something like: "weeping water". The origin of the word is based on an Indian legend that tells of a battle between two tribes in which both sides suffered heavy losses and the families left behind shed tears, which then formed the weeping waters . The first settlers arrived at Weeping Water in 1856, although the land had been on maps for some time. The first log cabin was built and a post office was set up in 1857. In 1883, the arrival of the railroad in Weeping Water made it possible for it to exist. Thirteen years earlier, the city was officially registered. The surrounding quarries provided enough limestone to build new buildings. This is how, for example, the first permanent schoolhouse was built in 1888; the first high school was completed in 1917.
