The prerequisite for this is the naturalness of the edge zones, which z. B. excludes spraying with herbicides and requires economical clearing or mowing . Edge areas protected in this way offer living space for all kinds of insects, small mammals and spiders.

From time to time there is still old hedges on dirt roads , which are an important habitat for many bird species.

Road shoulders and embankments that exist along larger roads are severely affected by the effects of the road surface, such as tire wear and de-icing salts . Frequently, the verges gradually grow upward due to accumulated dust and are occasionally peeled off. Typical vegetation of these regularly mowed, but otherwise mostly left to their own devices, are ruderal fat meadows with the predominant grass type of oat . The wild carrot is often characteristic of leaner forms . For the more heavily loaded edge and particularly median characteristic salt-enduring species such as Danish scurvy-grass , Common puccinellia and reporting species such as gloss reporting and Verschiedensamige reporting .

The wayside was proclaimed Biotope of the Year 1994 by the Nature Conservation Center Hessen .
