The fortified tower in Palterndorf in the Weinviertel ( Lower Austria ) was first mentioned in 1414 in the Liechtenstein land register . The tower is likely to be significantly older. It is the only Gothic village tower in Lower Austria north of the Danube .

Structure and history

The tower was built from rubble stones , the wall thickness reaches a thickness of over one meter at the base . On a base area of 8 by 8 meters, the tower rises to an eaves height of 14 meters. Nothing is left of the former wall and moat.

On the ground floor there is a barrel-vaulted room that is accessible through a door that was built later. This access made it possible to use the space as a stable, the remains of the feed troughs are still there. Originally this room could only be reached through a fear door from the first floor of the tower. Legend has it that there was an underground escape route into the fortified church of Palterndorf, but the existence of this connection could not be proven.

The actual tower entrance is a high entry on the first floor and could only be reached by a ladder before it was made accessible in 2004 by a wooden staircase attached to the outside of the tower. The tower had a total of three floors and a final platform. Later it was given a tent-shaped roof with a clock attached. In 1945 the tower burned down and was then empty.

In 2005 the defense tower of Palterndorf was renovated. According to the old floor plan, a solid wood construction with four levels was installed. The tower can be visited and today houses a museum , which presents an exhibition on the relationship between the place and the Teutonic Order (Palterndorf has been a Teutonic Order parish since 1290). The top platform offers an impressive view that extends as far as the Little Carpathians in Slovakia.
