The Weißenburger Kirchweih ( Franconian Kerwa or Körwa ) is an annual folk festival in Weißenburg in Bavaria in the central Franconian district of Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen . With an estimated 100,000 visitors, it is the largest parish fair in southern Franconia .

history

The parish fair originally took place on the occasion of the consecration of the St. Andreas town church in 1327. It was first mentioned in 1455. The Weißenburg emigrants to America celebrated the Weissenburg parish fair in New York City in the 19th century . In 1921 a parish fair committee was founded to better organize the festival. During the two world wars, the parish fair could not be held. Before the Kirchweihplatz was laid out on Wiesenstrasse in 1961, the festival took place on a meadow on Jahnstrasse. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Germany , the parish fair was canceled for the first time since the Second World War.
