description

The white sage grows as an evergreen perennial herbaceous plant to subshrub and reaches heights of up to 1 meter. The mainly basal, highly aromatic leaves are 4 to 8 cm wide and lanceolate with a finely serrated leaf edge. The leaf surface is densely and pressed down with fine, simple hairs ( trichomes ), which makes the leaves appear whitish.

The flowers are few in groups together with bent-back, linear-lanceolate bracts , within a complex inflorescence . The hermaphrodite flowers are zygomorphic and five-fold. White to pale purple. The five 8 to 10 mm long sepals are fused, with the upper lip not divided. The white with lavender-colored petals are fused into a 12 to 22 mm long tube; the upper lip is smaller than 2 mm; the 4 to 5 mm long lower lip is bent upwards and blocks the throat. Stamens and stylus tower above the corolla tube. The Klaus fruit disintegrates into 2.5 to 3 mm long, light brown, shiny nuts.

Occurrence

The white sage is found mainly in the southwest of the USA ( Nevada , California , Mojave and Sonoran Deserts ) and in the northwest of Mexico in Baja California.

The preferred location is fully exposed to the sun, rather dry, especially in winter - because the plant is sensitive to waterlogging. Many of the locations are therefore also found in some of the desert regions of America.
