The White Castle is the oldest building in Heringsdorf on Usedom in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district . The building, which is now used as a hotel and restaurant, is located at Rudolf-Breitscheid-Straße 3 and is a listed building.

history

Georg Bernhard von Bülow and his brother owned the Gothen manor , which extended to the Baltic Sea over the area of the later town of Heringsdorf. In 1825 he had the first guest house built on the Kulm, a 34 m high sandy hill, for the beginning spa tourism. Architect of the classical Bulow's Logierhauses was Karl Friedrich Schinkel .

In 1859, the imperial count of Stolberg-Wernigerode acquired the Peterswaldau Gothen and Heringsdorf house and thus also the lodging house. In 1866, Crown Princess Victoria of Prussia lived here with her sons Wilhelm and Heinrich . The Prussian Crown Prince Friedrich joined them after the end of the German War . From 1867, the Count's widow lived in the White Castle herself.

In the early 1920s, Kurt Tucholsky spent two holidays in the house. During the GDR era, the house was at times the holiday home of the SED Central Committee and was used by the SED district party school until 1989. After reunification , the building was placed under monument protection and renovated. Since then it has been used as a hotel again.

building

The single-storey, nine-axis building with a gable roof has a loft with a jamb . A two-storey, only slightly protruding middle risalit goes over three axes, of which the arched entrance forms the middle one. There are two arched windows on its upper floor. The ground floor has plastered ashlar , while the jamb and the upper floor of the risalite are smoothly plastered. In keeping with its name, the entire facade is painted white.
