Life
Her father was a senior military man, which is why she moved frequently with her parents during her childhood.
After graduating from Fudan University with a degree in Chinese Language and Literature in 1995, she worked in various professions, including journalist and television editor. She has published a number of short story collections and novels in China .
At the age of 25, she published the novel Shanghai Baby , which was initially banned in China because of the excessive depiction of romantic scenes. After its publication, the novel found many enthusiastic readers, before the Communist Party banned it for "sexual excesses", temporarily closed the publishing house and left existing copies of the book to a public book burning . The book has now been translated into 31 languages and has appeared in 45 countries. In 2007, the film with the leading actress Bai Ling , directed and produced by Berengar Pfahl, was presented at the Berlinale .
In 2005 her second novel Marrying Buddha was published and translated into English.
