Besides the upper town, Weidenhausen is the oldest settlement area in Marburg (first documented mention in 1235) and belongs to the inner core town of Marburg. The former bridge suburb is located on the left bank of the Lahn directly across from the city center. a. connected by the Weidenhausen Bridge , which has existed since around 1250 and was last rebuilt in 1892 . The district is now bordered by the Erlenring in the north, the city motorway ( B 3 ) in the east, a green area in the south and the Lahn with the Trojedamm in the west.

Cityscape

Topographic map of Marburg with Weidenhausen from 1857.

Weidenhausen was originally a street village and still consists mainly of two rows of closely packed half-timbered houses , some of which are decorated with splendid wood carvings, along Weidenhäuser Straße, which leads to the bridge. The other larger streets next to the Erlengraben in the north are a new development area from the 1990s and named after Marburg twin towns (Mariborer Straße, Sfaxer Straße, Poitiers-Straße) and converge in Friedensplatz. In the south of the district, the Hirsefeldsteg acts as another bridge over the Lahn and connects the Lahntal cycle path along the river on the flood protection dam with the southern district.

The city's DJH youth hostel is also located in the south, near the Lahnwehr Grüner Wehr . The overnight accommodation used by school classes for school trips, school camps and city visitors was initially closed in January 2020 due to an upcoming renovation with possible demolition and new construction, but then remained permanently closed due to the corona measures caused economic problems of the youth hostel ; a new youth hostel would have cost around 7 million euros and was initially controversial in the city because of its barrack-like appearance. The old house, which is already being dismantled, could now "remain as a ruin."

Narrow alleys and passages lead to the numerous Weidenhäuser courtyards , which in September are the scene of the largest Marburg district festival, the Weidenhäuser Höfefest. Every year in September, the Weidenhausen duck race takes place in the district on the Lahn . The small park with lawn and children's playground on Trojedamm is named after the English town twinning Northampton Park , which has existed since 1992 .

The green weir, also called Weidenhausen weir, a hydraulic structure in the Lahn for a constant water level, irrigation of the gardens and mills with buildings from 1553 has a history-defining significance.
