The Weilberg is a summit ( 242.1 m above sea level ) of the Siebengebirge in Königswinter in the North Rhine-Westphalian Rhein-Sieg district .
Quarry
The Weilberg is particularly important because of the quarry , which has been closed since 1940 , and which provides an insight into the rock structure of the former Siebengebirge volcano .
The volcanic activity began about 30 million years ago with a tremendous rain of ash ( trachyte tuff ). Magma penetrated the tuff and burned it in a red colored contact zone; the tuff was arched and offset at faults. Finally, lava rose again. A young basalt pervades the older, narrow corridor and widens in the soft tuff. The surface of the volcano is no longer intact; a large part of the tuff and basalt has been removed again through prolonged erosion . The Rhine flowed over this plateau in the Pleistocene (Ice Age) .
Protected area
On October 15, 1971, the Siebengebirge was awarded the European Diploma for Protected Areas on Weilberg .
The Weilberg is located in the middle part of the "Siebengebirge" nature reserve.
