history

There has been a wine-growing museum in Stuttgart at Schmalen Strasse 11 since 1937, but it was destroyed during the Second World War. In 1979 a new wine museum was opened in the old Ortskelter in the Stuttgart suburb of Uhlbach. In 2011/12 the exhibition was completely revised and modernized and reopened in August 2012.

building

inside view

The half-timbered house was built in 1907 by the community of Uhlbach and served as a local cellar until 1948. The building replaced the old Uhlbacher Kelter, which had become too cramped. The new larger building also had a representative function and emphasized the importance of viticulture for the place. After the establishment of a new cooperative wine cellar, the building was used as a fire station and warehouse, among other things, before it was rebuilt in 1979 and given a new purpose as a viticulture museum.

exhibition

The exhibition is divided into twelve subject areas. Historical and modern exhibits show the development of viticulture in Stuttgart from Roman times to the 21st century. Tools illustrate the work of the winegrowers in earlier centuries compared to today. You can see, among other things, drinking vessels, wine presses as well as richly decorated wine barrels and art objects that are over 100 years old .

The focus of the exhibition is on the particularities of viticulture in Stuttgart. The focus is on the vineyard consolidation in Stuttgart in the 1960s and 1970s, when the original horizontal vineyard terraces with dry stone walls that prevent soil erosion were converted into large plots arranged in the fall line. The local soil and climatic conditions and their effects on wine production are also shown. One subject area is dedicated to the origins of broom taverns and wine festivals.

The museum shows works by the artist Eugen Häfele (1922–2008) in a permanent exhibition . The wine and festival culture and the daily work of the winegrowers are recorded in detail in his wood carvings, charcoal drawings and oil paintings. Texts in German and English provide information about the exhibits. Per QR Code they can about smartphones also be interrogated in French, Italian and Spanish. Guided tours in German and English are possible by appointment.
