The Anita und Hans Nittnaus winery in Gols is an Austrian winery in the Neusiedlersee wine-growing region in Burgenland .

history

According to historical records, the Nittnaus family has been viticulture in Gols for 300 years. In 1927 Johann Nittnaus (1888 to 1960) built the current building. Wines were already being bottled in the company in the 1930s. The successor to the company was Johann Nittnaus (* 1924).

His son Hans ("John") Nittnaus (* 1955) attended the Higher Federal College and Federal Office for Viticulture and Fruit Growing in Klosterneuburg from 1969 to 1974 . After graduating from high school, he assumed sole responsibility for the cellar in 1975. At the same time he studied composition from 1982 in Vienna at the University of Music and Performing Arts. From 1984 he was unable to continue his studies because of operational indispensability. Since 1985 the winery has been under the management of Hans ("John") Nittnaus and his wife Anita.

In the following time, Hans Nittnaus developed a strong community spirit with a number of commitments. After initially being active for a while in the Burgenland winegrowers 'association "Renommierte Weingüter Burgenland" (RWB), he became a founding member of the Gols winegrowers' association "Pannobile" in 1994, to which he has been involved with his ideas from the very beginning. He even ceded the name he had previously protected to the “Pannobile” group (a red wine previously operated under the name “Pannobile”). The vinology project, which is important for the establishment of the younger Burgenland quality viticulture, is largely based on the initiative of Hans Nittnaus.

Hans Nittnaus has been cultivating land on the Leithaberg since 1999. In 2004 he leased the entire area of the Joiser winery Ernst Winter in this area. As a result of his enthusiasm for the Leithaberg terroir, he initiated the “Leithaberg” winegrowers' association in 2006, from which an appellation of the same name emerged in 2010. Hans Nittnaus set the tone when working out the sublime wine style for the “Leithaberg DAC ” appellation .

The Anita und Hans Nittnaus winery has won a number of important awards, including 1st prize at the Falstaff Red Wine Gala in 2012 and 2017 and the Vinaria Trophy 2018 for Cuvée Comondor. As the leader of the jazz group "John Nittnaus Band", Hans Nittnaus performs in a cultural context. Some of these also take place in the context of the wine scene.

Vineyards, varieties

The vineyard area is 40 hectares (as of 2018), 90 percent of which are planted with red grape varieties , mainly Blaufränkisch and Zweigelt , and also with Sankt Laurent and Merlot . White grape varieties that are mainly grown in the Leithagebirge vineyards in the Neusiedlersee-Hügelland wine-growing region are Chardonnay , Sauvignon Blanc , Grüner Veltliner and Pinot Blanc . In a comparatively small amount, Trockenbeerenauslese is also obtained.

Economy, wine stylistics

The terroir-shaped wines have been produced in biodynamic farming since 2007 . Nittnaus is one of the pioneers in puristic red wine production in Austria. As part of his commitment to the Leithaberg, he inspired a number of up-and-coming producers with his purist attitude.

The best known is the red wine range of the winery Anita und Hans Nittnaus, which includes several premium wines with Comondor, Pannobile red and the Blaufränkisch. The Cuvée Comondor , with which Nittnaus managed to rise to the Burgenland wine-growing elite in the early 1990s, is known for its depth and structure. The former cuvee partner Cabernet Sauvignon has now been replaced by Zweigelt. The name Comondor refers to a Hungarian breed of sheepdog. Pannobile red is a cuvée from Gols made of the autochthonous varieties Zweigelt and Blaufränkisch, which can contain quite different proportions of the two cuvee partners from vintage to vintage. Several premium wines of the Blaufränkisch and Chardonnay varieties come from the Leithaberg, where Nittnaus has vineyards with limestone and slate soils. Despite all their diversity, these wines from different locations have something in common: their moderate alcohol content, their liveliness, their puristic complexity and their captivating drinking flow. The wines are all fermented spontaneously, the red wines are not fined. Experience has shown that Nittnaus premium wines are extremely durable.
