Claus Schneider winery

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Claus Schneider winery in Weil am Rhein is located in the southern Markgräflerland in the German wine-growing region of Baden . The Burgundy varieties and the local Gutedel are grown on the twelve hectares of the winery .

history

The Schneider family has been based in Weil am Rhein , on the border with Basel (CH) and France ( Alsace ), and has been closely associated with viticulture since 1425 . Already before 1881 the wines were self- marketed and, as was common at the time, delivered in wooden barrels. The purchase of the manor house in 1892 at Hauptstrasse 94 in Alt-Weil laid the foundation for today's winery. The business has been run since 1982 by Claus Schneider, to whom it owes its current name, and Susanne Hagin – Schneider (who comes from the former Friedrich Hagin winery in Haltingen ). Right from the start, the winery was careful to only produce fully fermented wines, which was unusual for the time. The sons Johannes and Christoph Schneider have been involved since 2015 and continue the traditional estate.

Alt-Weil, located below the Tüllinger mountain, was mentioned as a Gut von St. Gallen as early as 786 . Located directly on the border with Switzerland, the Baden Wine Route begins in Weil am Rhein , where the nobility, monasteries, monasteries and the city of Basel owned vineyards on the southern slope of the Tüllinger Berg (hamlet Schlipf ) as early as the 11th century .

Growing area / locations

The winery cultivates 12 hectares on the Tüllinger Berg, which is supplied with warm winds via the Burgundian Gate between Vosges and Jura , which enables the flow of Mediterranean air and thus offers favorable climatic conditions for the production of large Burgundy wines. The Schneider winery manages some of the following individual vineyards on Tüllinger Berg:

Hamlet Schlipf

Weiler Schlipf's 26 hectare single site was classified as the best site in southern Markgräflerland as early as 1825. The vineyards face south and have deep loamy soils with a high proportion of lime . The Schlipf is a cross-border vineyard and is called Riehener Schlipf on the Swiss side .

Ötlinger Sonnhole

The vineyard area of the Ötlinger Sonnhole is 15 hectares and is a south-facing slope where Basel monasteries were already involved in viticulture in earlier centuries.

Haltinger stairs

The Haltinger Stiege vineyard has an area of 32 hectares.

Variety mirror

  • Pinot Noir 40%, mainly in the hamlet of Schlipf
  • White Burgundy 20%
  • Burgundy gray 15%
  • Chardonnay 8%
  • Gutedel 17%

Oenological philosophy

The Claus Schneider winery only produces dry and long-lasting wines from the Burgundy varieties and Gutedel. The red wine is made through traditional must fermentation. The wines remain on the fine lees in the barrel for a long time . The single vineyard wines produce wines with a high aging potential.
