The FX Pichler winery in Dürnstein is an Austrian winery in the Wachau wine-growing region in Lower Austria . The winery is owned by the family in the fifth generation. In 1971, Franz Xaver Pichler, or FX for short, took over the 3 hectare farm from Franz Pichler and expanded it to 12 hectares of vineyards. The company, which has grown to 20 hectares, is now run by his son Lucas and his wife Johanna.

Varieties, wines

The vineyards are exclusively made from white grape varieties, mainly Grüner Veltliner (52 percent) - mostly planted with the selection of Franz Pichler senior. - and Riesling (47 percent), Sauvignon Blanc (1%) planted. The vineyards are located both in the valley floor (203 m above sea level) and 45% in mountain terraces (up to 300 m above sea level) from the 12th and 13th centuries. Since the 2009 vintage, the wines have been matured in the new cellar building just outside of Oberloiben. The new basement building has a modern presentation room on the upper floor with a wonderful view of the vineyards of Dürnstein, Ober- and Unterloiben.

The wines come from the locations Kellerberg, Loibenberg, women's vineyards, Klostersatz, Burgstall, Liebenberg and Steinertal.

The best-known wines are the Grüner Veltliner M (for Monumental ) and the Grüner Veltliner Kellerberg Smaragd as well as the Rieslings M , Infinite and Kellerberg Smaragd.

The winery is a member of the Vinea Wachau Nobilis Districtus and is often referred to as the most outstanding winery in Austria. Hugh Johnson describes the winery as "a top producer in the Wachau, one of Austria's best". Numerous national and international awards document the high quality standard of the winery. One of the very highest awards he received in 2002 from Robert Parker jun. in his magazine Wine Advocate , where he writes: "What is Château Latour in Bordeaux, Domaine Romanée-Conti in Burgundy, FX Pichler is in the Wachau".

Soil and location

The company's vineyards are located on the slopes of the Danube valley cut through the Gföhler Gneiss , a 488 million year old rock made of feldspar , gneiss and mica schist . The Gföhler gneiss together with the Dobra gneiss form the highest floor of the Gföhl unit. The soils created by weathering are called climbing soils. They are predominant in the terraced areas. There are shallow, skeletal , and therefore very dry soils. Loess soils are only found in these locations with a small proportion of the area. At the foot of the mountain and in the valleys, this soil mixes with clay, sand and gravel that were once deposited by the Danube. With the location and its exposure, the macro and microclimate, these soils create the prerequisites for the delicacy and minerality of the wines.
