The Graf von Kanitz winery is a winery in the Rheingau . It belongs to the Association of German Predicate and Quality Wineries .

The winery cultivates an acreage of 13.5 hectares according to the specifications of Ecovin (Federal Association of Ecologically Working Wineries). The vineyards are located around the village of Lorch (Rheingau) in the far west of the Rheingau wine-growing region .

The vineyards that were mentioned in documents as early as the 13th century are Bodental-Steinberg, Kapellenberg, Krone, Pfaffenwies and Schlossberg. Their dominant soil type is weathered shale , in some locations also quartzite soil . The slope of the steep slopes towards the south and south-west offers optimal sun exposure.

The wines , both dry and semi-dry and fruity expanded , the tip form first layers -wines and noble sweet dishes. The leading grape variety is Riesling , alongside which the Burgundy family and, as a specialty, the Gewürztraminer , which is rare in the Rheingau , are grown.

In 1924 the business from the family estate of Baron Heinrich Friedrich Karl vom und zum Stein was passed on to Count Albrecht von Kanitz and has been owned by the von Kanitz family ever since . The winery has been a member of Ecovin since 1992, and the standards of the ANOG , the association for organic farming, have been implemented since 1968 .

The winery ran a bar on the ground floor of the Hilchenhaus , the former residence of the Rheingau family of Hilchen von Lorch , until the 1990s. Another bar is located in Cappenberg Castle in Selm , which is also part of the family heritage. 1,000 vines were planted on the vineyard in the summer of 2017; one hopes to be able to harvest the first wine in three years from what is probably the northernmost vineyard in North Rhine-Westphalia. Until the end of the Middle Ages, the monks of the Cappenberg monastery were already growing wine there.
