The Julius Zotz winery is a family winery in Heitersheim , Baden , which, with around 95 hectares of vineyards, is one of the largest family businesses in Germany.
history
A line of the Zotz family had come to Baden from Tyrol in 1804 , where Karl Zotz (1808–1894) acquired the eastern part of the Maltese Castle in Heitersheim in 1845. Here he founded a wine-growing business in 1845, which was officially founded, continued and named after his son Julius Zotz (1840–1926) in 1865 with the entry in the commercial register. Today's winery was only built around 1900 in the immediate vicinity of the Heitersheim Maltese Castle.
The Heitersheim Castle was from 1428 to 1806 the seat of the Grand Priory of the Order of Malta for Germany. In keeping with this tradition, the vineyards around Heitersheim were grouped under the name of the "Maltesergarten". The Zotz winery cultivates a large part of its vineyards here.
In 1977 Martin Zotz produced the “Gutedel Sekt extra brut”, Baden's first wine- growing sparkling wine based on the traditional Méthode . Martin and Michael Zotz run the winery in the 4th and 5th generation.
Variety mirror
The Zotz winery mainly focuses on the classic grape varieties in southern Baden. Chasselas , Pinot Blanc , Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir make over 80% of the vineyards. Besides Müller-Thurgau , the range of grape varieties also includes small amounts of Riesling , Gewürztraminer , Muscat , Nobling and, more recently, French varieties such as Chardonnay , Sauvignon Blanc , Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon . In addition to about 50 wines, the winery Julius Zotz produced numerous sparkling wines and sparkling wines in the traditional Champagne method, alcohol-sparkling wine and several brandies .
Ecological orientation
The vineyards of Weingut Zotz are cultivated according to the guidelines of the state of Baden-Württemberg for environmentally friendly viticulture, whereby soil care, nutrient supply and plant protection are taken into account.
