The Schiefer winery is an Austrian winery in Welgersdorf in the Eisenberg wine-growing region .

history

The winery was founded by Uwe Schiefer, who took up the profession of winemaker in the mid-1990s as a career changer and a complete novice in viticulture. Before that, he had worked as a waiter and sommelier in Viennese restaurants - including the renowned “Steirereck”. After attending the Austria Wine Academy in Rust , he started his own winery in Welgersdorf. In a relatively short time, the company rose to become one of the leading wineries in Austria. According to Stephan Reinhardt, Parker representative for Germany and Austria since 2014 , Uwe Schiefer won over an international audience with his “fine, fresh and yet profound terroir wines” and also inspired a number of - especially young - winegrowers from Burgenland with his wine style.

The winery

The vineyard area is 15 hectares (as of 2015), 90 percent of which are planted with red grape varieties. Most of the cultivation areas are in the area around Eisenberg in southern Burgenland , while some slate also grows wine in the neighboring Hungarian border area. Since 2013, Schiefer has also been growing wine in Purbach am Neusiedler See and in Lutzmannsburg in Central Burgenland.

The winery specializes primarily in Blaufränkisch . Uwe Schiefer is one of the pioneers of a delicately structured Blaufränkisch style that is not heavily woody and has no noticeable roasted aromas. The expansion takes place with spontaneous fermentation (without the addition of cultured yeast) with moderate use of sulfur, no enzymes are used. As a result of the high proportion of iron and slate in the soils around the Eisenberg, Schiefer's southern Burgenland Blaufränkisch has a distinctive minerality.

The Austrian Vinaria -Weinguide certifies that Schiefer-Blaufränkischen already has outstanding potential in the classic segment. Schiefer's premium Blaufränkische from the Szapary and Reihburg vineyards are among the red wines that have received national and international attention. In the ranking of the US wine critic Robert Parker, Schiefer's premium wines are among the highest rated Austrian red wines. The British wine critic Jancis Robinson counts several Blaufränkische from Schiefer among the best red wines in Austria.

Schiefer is also breaking new ground in the white wine sector by striving for high Welschriesling qualities, especially since this variety is generally not believed to have any particular potential in dry aging. Schiefer's “ Grüner Veltliner Tschaterberg” comes from Tschaterberg in southern Burgenland, a traditional white wine-growing region .
