The Wel meanders through the Masurian Lake District first in a south-westerly and later in a northerly direction , flows through the town of Lidzbark (Lautenburg) and feeds several lakes in the process.

The river is very popular with water hikers. After 118 km the Wel flows into the Drwęca at Bratian (Brattian) .
