The small wood of Welborn is located 2½ kilometers west of Schwarzholz and one kilometer west of Altenzaun in the Altmark .

history

After being cremated by lightning, the manor in Wellborn was relocated to Polkritz in 1541 by Hans Woldeck . The first documentary mention of a field mark comes from the year 1542 as behind the Walborn and the wood Walborn . About half a hoof acre at Wellborn belonged to the parish in Polkritz. In 1686 the Hoff Welborn, which is also called Polckeritz , had seven Hufen Landes. In 1745 Wellborn was a Vorwerk of the Miss von Woldeck at the Polkritz church. In 1804 there was a brick barn called "Wellborn" , which belonged to the sheep farm and Vorwerk Rauenthal near Osterholz . Further mentions are 1820 Wellborn and 1843 Wallborn . Hermes and Weigelt report in 1842 that the Wellborn Vorwerk was sold to the owner of the estate in Osterholz in 1834 when the dismembled Polkritz estate was sold. In 1902 Wilhelm Zahn names a colony of Wellborn, located on the southeastern part of the Polkritz field, 900 meters south of the village, one kilometer west of Altenzaun. That Wellborn, as tradition claims, was originally a village cannot be proven, he said.

Origin of the place name

The name is derived from the German wave for wallen, sprudeln and born die Quelle , so it means Sprudelquelle.

Legend of the evil knight Wellborn

In 1902 Alfred Pohlmann tells the legend that he took over from Sophie von Sichart's "Mären und Sagen" .

The Knight Wellborn owned a castle that was in the field of the Altenzaun manor. The knight was inflamed with a passionate love for the beautiful noblewoman von Schwarzholz . But since the virgin did not want to know anything about his love, he stole her and wanted to bring her into his castle by force. But he failed to achieve the same thing. He escaped from his pursuers with his beautiful booty in the church at Polkritz . When the church was opened forcibly, the Fraulein von Schwarzholz had disappeared and was never seen again, but the evil knight was lying dead in front of the steps of the altar.

Pohlmann continues: “The traces of both castles can still be seen. Until recently, on Wellborn, as a small strip of forest is still called, there was a poor little house in which an old woman lived. After her death the owner pulled down the dwelling and had the well filled up. There are supposed to be peculiar flowers blooming in the place, which otherwise do not grow in the forest, but all pale and colorless because a ray of sun seldom or never can hit them. "

The legend also reports that an underground passage led from the knight's castle over the lost water near Altenzaun to the town of Werben .
