Detail of the chapel - Saint Wendelin

The Wendelinus Chapel is a chapel in the Winterscheid district of the municipality of Ruppichteroth . It is named after Saint Wendelin .

history

In 1805/06 the carpenter and carver Peter Richarz (1743–1816) from Winterscheiderbröl built a saint's house at his own expense , which was dedicated to Wendelin. The small chapel stood on church land and quickly became a pilgrimage destination for the local rural population.

After Richarz's death, the family of Franz Syberz, also from Winterscheiderbröl, took over the maintenance of the building. His widow Maria Elisabeth had the chapel torn down in 1840, probably because it could no longer accommodate the pilgrims who had become more numerous, and a few meters away the larger Wendelinus chapel, still in existence today, was built from rubble masonry.

However, since the widow Syberz had not obtained church approval for the demolition or the new building, and certainly not for the erection of two sacrificial sticks , the proceeds of which she had been collecting for years, a lengthy legal dispute broke out over the ownership of the new chapel . In 1843, following a decision by the Archbishop's General Vicariate , it passed to the parish without compensation. Widow Syberz is said to have been harmed enough for the construction costs by the long-term income from the offering sticks.

1877 made Glockengießer Christian Claren from Sieglar of a bell for the chapel in 1886, it was equipped with a new slab floor and benches, painted by the painter Robert Rosenthal in 1887 and 1889 with the help of an anonymous donor from America, maybe the pastor Henry Stommel , with provided with a slate roof.

In 1895 the Rendant B. Walterscheid had an altar stone erected and donated a terracotta image with Christ resting at the grave. The year 1951 saw another renewal of the roof. Around 1975 the chapel was looted and the picture and the statue of St. Wendelinus stolen. Today's interior essentially corresponds to the furnishings from 1843.

The chapel is entered under serial number 58 in the list of monuments of the municipality of Ruppichteroth.
