The basic equipment of the work board consists of a table with one side firmly anchored to a wall with a solid, stable worktop made of wood. A large recess in a semicircular shape has been left in the table top, where the goldsmith sits. In the middle of the recess is the filing nail , a hardwood wedge that is firmly wedged into a recess in the edge of the table top. The filing nail serves as a contact surface that offers resistance when processing smaller workpieces by filing, sawing, bending and similar methods. The skin is fastened under the arched recess of the work board , a hollow made of soft leather , often suede , similar to half a sack , which catches the filing . Filing is the term used to describe the precious metal-containing sawdust, filing and drilling chips that are produced when machining the workpieces , which are collected and later cleaned and reused. Under the filing nail there are usually one or two drawers in which smaller work or personal items can be stored. On the table behind the filing nail, there is a heat-resistant cover for the table top, usually a steel block that also serves as a straightening plate . A cuboid, refractory soldering plate (soldering pad) is placed on top of it, which can be made of ceramic, fireclay , charcoal (natural or pressed, a surrounding carbon holder made of sheet metal is recommended to avoid breaking) - all heat-insulating - or heat-conducting graphite or platinum .

To the side of the recess and underneath on the table legs, there are holding devices within easy reach for a wide variety of tools such as many types of pliers , saws , ring bars , ring stock , ring gauges and others. In addition to a bright, glare-free and swiveling work lamp , the chopping iron is indispensable. This is a massive cube made of steel, which has an absolutely flat ground and polished surface and is used, among other things, to precisely align the workpieces. Are on the Workbench amongst a number of other tools such as files of many different shapes and sizes, hammers of various types, a variety of punches and gravers , a caliper , a micrometer , a steel angle with stop, a tack , a triangular scraper , a shearing machine , a Dreuelbohrer and many others today always have a powerful hanging drill motor attached above the center of the table with a flexible shaft for drilling, milling, grinding and smaller polishing work. In addition to the recess in the table top, there is also a holder for the gas burner, with which the soldering and smaller melting jobs are carried out.

Other components of the workshop

In the goldsmith's workshop there is a whole range of other work equipment and tools, such as a small anvil , a powerful vice with various drawing irons , a sheet metal and wire roller , a polishing motor , an electroplating system , an ultrasonic cleaning device and many others, but they are no longer belong directly to the work board.
