Werner Allgöwer (born March 24, 1879 in St. Gallen ; † February 21, 1966 in Lucerne ; resident in St. Gallen and Lucerne) was a Swiss politician ( SP ).

Family and work

Werner Allgöwer, son of Karl Allgöwer, completed a commercial apprenticeship in St. Gallen and Zurich after completing compulsory schooling . In the course of his professional life, Werner Allgöwer initially worked as a tram employee in Zurich, then as a businessman, from 1900 to 1911 for the Zurich tram , from 1911 to 1918 as secretary of the Workers' Union of Swiss Transport Companies (AUST) in Lucerne, from 1917 to 1945 as cartel president of the union of the traffic staff (SEV) and from 1918 to 1948 as a district judge in Lucerne city.

Allgöwer, who belonged to the Olten Action Committee (OAK) from April to September 1918, also took part in the state strike .

Werner Allgöwer was first married to Franziska née Schorno, and her second marriage to Bertha née Brun. He died in February 1966 a month before he would turn 87 in Lucerne.

Political functions

Allgöwer joined the Social Democratic Party (SP) and was one of the leading figures in the Lucerne workers' movement . In 1915 he was elected to the great city council of Lucerne, where he sat until 1943. At the cantonal level, he represented his party in the Lucerne Grand Council from 1935 to 1963 . In 1950 the people elected him to the National Council in Bern , from which he resigned in 1955. In addition, Werner Allgöwer served as vice -chairman of the board of directors of the Lucerne-Engelberg electricity company from 1950 and from 1951 to 1964 as head of Winter Aid Lucerne.
