Werner Baumann (born October 21, 1934 ) is a former German soccer player who played for BSG Motor Zwickau in the GDR Oberliga , the highest soccer league in the GDR , in the 1950s .

Athletic career

On May 1, 1953, the 18-year-old Baumann played his first league game. In the third from last point game of the company sports community (BSG) Motor Zwickau in the 1952/53 season, a home game against BSG Motor Jena (6-0), he was substituted on in the 81st minute. Then it took until February 21, 1954, until Baumann came again for Zwickau in a league game and this time was on the field for 67 minutes. He scored his first league goal a week later when he scored the goal for his team in the match between Motor Zwickau and BSG Turbine Halle (1: 2) after half-time. It was only in his fourth league game that he was used for the entire duration of the game. By the end of the season he played a total of seven point games and scored two goals. In addition, he was with Motor Zwickau on July 3, 1954 as a half-left striker in the final of the GDR soccer cup. Despite his goal to the 1: 1 intermediate result, the Zwickau lost the game against the second division forward Berlin with 1: 2.

In the 1954/55 season Baumann played with 21 stakes and five goals in the core formation of BSG Motor. When in the second half of 1955 a transition round was held in GDR football to align the season with the calendar year in the future, Baumann was involved in all 13 games. He was able to maintain his regular player status until 1959. In these four seasons he was only injured in four point games in 1959 and was mainly used as a striker in the half-right or half-left position. In 1960 Baumann was only used in the second half of the season in nine league games, and when they returned to the summer-spring season in 1961, he missed the first 13 league games and only played nine of the following 26 games. In his last league season 1962/63 he was also used only nine times. Baumann completed his last league game on March 24, 1963 in the game Zwickau - Dynamo Dresden (2-1) as a right winger. It was his 172nd game in the league, in which he scored 31 goals. In the 3-0 cup final victory over BSG Chemie Zeitz , Baumann was no longer there, but was still a member of BSG Motor Zwickau in the 1963/64 season. He was used again in the European Cup game MTK Budapest - Motor Zwickau, which the Zwickau lost on November 30, 1963 with 0: 2 and were eliminated in the first round.

1964/65 Werner Baumann played for a season in the second-rate GDR league for the BSG activist Karl Marx Zwickau . Of the 30 league games played, he played eight more games and was successful with one goal. He then ended his career in high-class football at the age of almost 31.
